| Why Nanotechnology? |

In a 2001 survey covering 1300 industry leaders, the Japan Patent office asked respondents to predict how progress in Nanotech would affect their industry. Over 60% of respondents working in Materials, and over 70% of those working in the Electronics area, answered that manufacturing methods in their industry would have to drastically change, and that further innovation would be needed. This response shows exceptional expectations for Nanotech, in particular in the Biotech field, where some 90% of respondents felt that Nanotech would lead to greater innovation in their industry. Over half the respondents felt that greater interaction would be necessary between researchers in different fields to achieve this. The number of Nanotechnology applications influencing our daily life is increasing steadily. In a separate survey, nearly 60% of industry leaders felt that technology transfer in Nanotech between the academic world and industry was insufficient, and that the number of Technology Licensing Organizations (TLOs) established in Japan (around 20) was far less than needed, especially when compared to the U.S. We at nanoTEN believe that best advice comes directly from leading researchers in the Nanotechnology field, since they can assess best the potential of current and future technologies. In particular, webelieve that the potential of Nanotechnology will by far surpass that of Biotechnology.
