Electronic Properties of (Gd@C82)n@SWNT Peapods

Unique electronic properties of sigle-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) encapsulating Gd-endohedral metallofullerenes, (Gd@C82)n@SWNT, are discussed based on HRTEM, EELS, UHV-STM/STS and FET-conductivity measurements. The results[1-4] indicate that the band-gap of a (Gd@C82)n@SWNT peapod significantly reduces at the site of the Gd@C82 fullerene site and ambipolar field-effect transistor behavior.
