Stable aqueous dispersions of multi- and single-wall nanotubes, purified by chromatography, were adsorbed onto chemically modified silicon oxide surfaces as well as on predefined electrode arrays with 100 nm electrode separation. Detailed structural investigations of thus deposited individual tubes were performed using Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM). It is shown that due to tip convolution and the limited lateral resolution of this technique, one should be careful when interpreting such data. Moreover, individual single-wall nanotubes (SWNT) or ropes of SWNTs were used as templates to align nanoparticles. For this purpose, the surface of the nanotubes was chemically modified by a two-step oxidation process and an adsorbed polymer monolayer. The successful alignment of colloidal Au particles (10 nm in diameter) on top of the nanotubes was proven by SFM investigations.
