Construction of nanotube assemblies inside of both scanning and transmission electron microscopes is being pursued; using this paradigm, both the imaging and construction operations can be accomplished with the electron beam. Manipulation of the tubes in three dimensions is done with manipulators built specifically for these microscopes. Electron beam deposition of both the "contaminating" background gases and controllably introduced gas precursors is used to attach nanotubes to bases and to each other.

The resultant assemblies can be tested electrically and mechanically inside within the microscopes used for construction.
