Electron emission from hydrogen saturated diamond and various types of carbon nanostructures incl. SWCNT and MWCNT seems to be close to flat panel display applications. Negative electron affinity and field emission with local field enhancement are potential emission processes. We have grown thin films of MWCNT and of mixtures of MW and SWCNT in microwave CVD and pyrolysis processes and measured workfunction and energy distribution (field emission spectroscopy) of the emitted electrons. All observed data fit nicely Fouler-Nordheim plots with macroscopic fields of a few Volts per micrometer and local fields of a few kV per micrometer. Emission ist not stable, not even the NT's are stable during emission. We will illustrate roles of H in the NT growth process and in their properties.
