The electrical transport, field emission, and other physical or chemical properties of carbon nanotubes depend drastically on the tube diameter, chirality, and their microstructural configurations. For the one-dimensional, quantum wire characteristics of single wall nanotubes to be properly evaluated and utilized, convenient and reproducible synthesis approaches are needed. For the attractive field emission properties [1] of SWNTs and MWNTs to be optimized for industrial applications, the control of nanotube morphology and distribution is essential. In this talk, various possible and desirable configurations of nanotubes for nanodevice and electron emission applications will be described, and some novel approaches that may enable us to obtain selected nanotube diameter, length, alignment, and distribution will be discussed.
