Large Arrays of Well-Aligned Carbon Nanotubes

WenIn this talk, I will discuss our recent success on the synthesis of large arrays of carbon nanotubes on glass, silicon, nickel, platinum, graphite, etc. by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at temperatures below 650°C. Acetylene and ammonia gases were used for carbon and catalyst respectively. Nanotubes with diameters ranging from 4 - 400 nm and lengths from 0.1 to 100 mm were obtained. The growth mechanism of perfect orientation will also be discussed. A variety of possible applications such as field-emission flat panel displays, AFM and STM microscopic tips, field effect transistors, battery electrodes, hydrogen storage, polymer composite for EMI shielding, superconducting pinning centers, etc. will also be discussed. In addition, I will aslo talk about our most recent success on synthesis and preliminary characterizations of controlled arrays of carbon nanotubes and a single carbon nanotube.
