Michigan State University - Media Advisory of July 24, 1999CUTTING-EDGE NANOTECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATED AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE
One hundred and fifty researchers from more than twenty countries are expected to attend a nanotechnology conference at Michigan State University July 24-27, 1999. The focus will be fullerene fibers of carbon and other materials, also known as nanotubes. These fibers are millimeter-long, tubular structures that are only a billionth of a meter in diameter, a hundred thousand times thinner than human hair. Nanotubes are potentially 30 to 100 times stronger than steel, but one-sixth its weight. Unique electronic properties of nanotubes also make them ideal candidates for molecular electronics components.
Applications of nanotubes range from smaller and faster computers to micro-machines for specialized medical applications and high-performance materials for the automobile industry. Demonstrations of nanotube-based devices will include a prototype super-bright, paper-thin, flat-panel TV display by the Korean company Samsung and artifical muscles for micro robots by the U.S. company Allied Signal. Researchers from General Motors, Ford and Toyota will be discussing applications of nanotubes in the auto industry. Such applications include electrostatic painting of plastic auto body parts, new metal composite materials for higher-efficiency engines, safer and lighter-weight automobile bodies, compact batteries, advanced sensors, and hydrogen fuel cells.
Michigan State University scientists will present a design of a nanotube-based computer memory capable of a trillion operations per second. This one-bit memory element, shown on the left, is hundreds of thousands times smaller than current computer memory.
