Synthesis with Intercalated Compounds?
Thomas J. ManningWe have been using covalently bonded (CxFy) graphite intercalated compounds to make low yields of nanotubes and high yields of nanoencapsulates (FexCy - 4-15 nm diameter). We have been injecting micron size dust into a argon inductively heated plasma for our results - there is a range of better methods/approaches to test intercalated compounds as starting material (although our results are promising!). Would anyone out there be willing to "exfoliate" the tip of their graphite electrode and perhaps treat with a metal (Ni, Co, etc.) before heating?? Or drilling a small hole in electrode and packing in some CxFy (I can supply) with some metals (i.e. La2O3) and heating???? Intercalation with fluorine changes hybridization (sp2 to sp3) and pushes graphite layers apart. We do not have the arc set-up but could supply treated rods. thanks - tom manning
