Conditions in a carbon arc are rather difficult to quantify. Laser ablation methods may lend themselves better to mechanistic studies that might by analogy positively impact the carbon arc technologies. We might think of tests like those reviewed or those reported in Roles of Laser Light and Heat in Formation of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes by Pulsed Laser Ablation of C(x) Ni(y)Co(y) Targets at High Temperature, M. Yudasaka, T. Ichihashi, S. Iijima, J. Phys. Chem. B, (1998) Vol. 102, 10201-10207.
