This is the first in the row of new houses and closest to the first marshrutka stop. The house lies only few hundred meters away from the old Shatili fortress. It is owned by the only medical doctor in Shatili, Dr. Mikhaili Chincharauli, and his wife Eliso, a Registered Nurse. Their two sons, Konstantini and Mangia, attend the local High School and speak English besides Kartuli.

What to expect?

The guest rooms are clean and comfortable, but not luxurious. Most rooms have a private bathroom with a shower. There are multiple power outlets in the rooms to recharge your mobile devices. The beds have fresh linen, and each guest obtains a towel. One more, rather luxurious and spacious bathroom is shared among the guests. It contains a toilet, a washing basin and a shower. There is a time delay of several minutes before water from the "hot water" faucet delivers really hot water.

As part of the AGAPE Sakartvelo network, the cost of a

  • simple dinner with the family,
  • overnight stay, and
  • breakfast with the family

How to Get There?

There is a marshrutka connecting Tbilisi and Shatili. It departs from Tbilisi-Didube every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and returns from Shatili the following day at 12:00 noon. It has a regular departure location in Didube near other marshrutkas for Kazbegi. You are well advised to reserve your seat on the previous day or to arrive at least one hour before departure, since especially the Shatili-bound marshrutka tends to be full, carrying mostly tourists with backpacks. If you are one of them, consider putting your backpack inside a huge plastic garbage bag to protect it from road dust.

The 150 km long trip takes 6 hours and the cost per person is GEL 30 each way. The marshrutka operates from Spring to September 30, when the 2,689 m (8,822 ft) high Datvisjvari pass becomes covered by snow and the road is no longer maintained. The marshrutka makes at least two 15-minute stops. One is at the Datvisjvari pass and the other at a market half-way between Tbilisi and the Datvisjvari pass. This is the last stop to purchase forgotten supplies. Only cash is accepted.

The journey is spectacular. The last 70 km of the road are unpaved and as challenging as the unpaved Abano Pass road in Tusheti, ranked as one of the 10 most dangerous roads in the World. It is not for the weak of heart, who may consider taking a tranquilizer or covering their eyes. Because of the local geological conditions, some road segments have slid down the slope and required repair. Still, the drivers of the 4-wheel drive Mercedes-brand marshrutkas are experienced and keep their passengers safe.
