The Story behind AGAPE Sakartvelo

Sakartvelo is the proper name of the country Georgia that connects Europe to Asia in the Caucasus mountain region. A country with a history covering 8 millenia, when it first introduced wine to be shared with friends at a meal. This is the essence of the Greek word agape, expressing friendship in the community during a meal.

Hospitality in Georgia, unlike most everywhere in the world, has withstood the test of time with flying colors. Agape and peace go hand in hand in this country that has kept its identity during challenges of occupation by foreign powers and poor economy. Georgians believe that every guest entering their house may be God Almighty in disguise. Once you experience the Georgian hospitality, you will be overwhelmed.

What is AGAPE Sakartvelo?

AGAPE Sakartvelo wishes to become a network of regular Georgian homes with unoccupied rooms across the entire country. A network of homes, where every guest is welcomed by the warm heart of a regular family. Each guest will share a simple dinner with the hosting family, like their son or daughter. The guest stays overnight and again shares breakfast with the family.

The guest experiences a much more personal encounter with a local family than in a rather anonymous hotel or airbnb. The guest arrives as a stranger and leaves as a friend of the family. This simple. Language differences never pose a problem when hearts communicate.

The benefits will be twofold.

  • The guest will have experienced the unique hospitality of a Georgian home at a fractional cost of a hotel stay.
  • The Georgian host family will be empowered by the appreciation of their hospitality by the guest and will receive a financial compensation for the cost of accommodating a guest.
This is a win-win situation for both.

AGAPE Sakartvelo is a growing network of volunteers who wish to bring hope back to the country of Georgia at zero financial benefit. Hopefully, it will attract more tourists to this beautiful and peaceful country and make it known around the globe. (Georgians are very humble people.) The first seed of this network was planted in July 2023.
